Around fifty cars have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Cars, walls and mailboxes were vandalized, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Police report they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued substance.
The substance had been applied in the shape of a swastika, they reported.
Police then located numerous other vandalized automobiles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials state early analysis show the fluid was likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to its origin; authorities are not yet aware of any physical harm in association with the event," they added.
Local authorities announced they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the community for details.
A senior representative said the incident made him stunned and required to be addressed promptly.
"This incident affects the core of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist violent incident in 2020," he posted on online, recalling the murder of nine victims by a gunman focusing on people of immigrant origin in February 2020.
