Larian Studios Reveal a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The buzz surrounding this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is working on a brand-new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio clarified that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team could be designing a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it pioneered the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, branching plots, and deep class systems—traits that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities you can achieve with a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously permissive, allowing players to improvise both in story and combat. Most missions can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can get ready for more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
